Leith's Softshell Turtle (Nilssonia leithii), an endemic turtle species to peninsular India, was observed nesting on a sandbank within the Cauvery Wildlife Sanctuary, Karnataka. These turtles are often found in deep, slow-flowing pools with sandy and rocky banks, which serve as their preferred habitat. This rare observation provides valuable insight into the nesting behaviour and habitat preferences of this elusive species, emphasizing the critical need to conserve riparian microhabitats. River engineering projects, such as the proposed Mekedattu Dam, pose a significant threat to these fragile ecosystems, endangering one of the last remaining natural habitats along the Cauvery River and the diverse species that depend on them. Protecting these habitats is vital for the survival of such threatened species and the overall health of the riverine ecosystem.
